Suffragette Official Trailer #1 (2015) - Carey Mulligan, Meryl Streep Dr...

Suffragette (Gavron, 2015) Analysis

Suffragette (Gavron, 2015)
  • The target audience for the film 'Suffragette' is mainly targeted for historians or for people who aren't but they are interested in history.
  • One reason why it's targeted for those types of people is that firstly, the setting of the film looks historical with many expensive looking houses and other buildings. (London, where the rich area is)
  • Another reason is the props that are being used. For example, the vehicles such as the cars are very old; very antique looking. It's as if it were the ones from the 80s/90s and this makes the film look like its from the historical times which therefore makes the film look historical.
  • Also, the costumes that people are wearing in the film are very old fashioned. The winter looking coats made of wool, the fedora hats men wear and the other types of hats the woman wear. This gives the film a historic atmosphere which therefore makes the film targeted to historical fans.

SPECTRE - Official Trailer

Spectre (Mendes, 2015) Analysis

Spectre (Mendes, 2015):

  • The conventions that the trailer follows is that at the beginning of the trailer, it shows the name of the distributor. Secondly, It also has the green background message that says that the trailer is approved for appropriate audiences. Also, it has shown many different scenes that fade into other scenes. additionally, it includes the soundtrack of the film, the actors with their voices and also, the title of the film at the end of the trailer
  • I believe that the target audience for this film is for people who enjoy the action/thriller genre. I also think it's targeted for young adults and middle aged adults.
  • The way that the distributor has targeted it for those types of people is that they show many different violent and explosive scenes with the dramatic music in the background. these contribute to the genre the film is which therefore is showing to the audience what type of genre the film is. Also, at the beginning of the trailer, it was shown to be calm and normal but then gets more extreme and dangerous towards the end. This makes the film look very tense which also shows who their target audience is.
  • My response is that the trailer was very well made that it clearly showed who their target audience was. the scenes were switching quiet fast with a 2 to 4 seconds interval and most of the scenes looked very dramatic. The sound also fitted well with the scenes because it made the scenes look very action packed.

Short film ("My Mate Stanley") Analysis

Pre-Production:

  • We used some props for the short film such as the packet of crisps, the mug and the jacket.
  • We chose different settings for the scenes. We used the staff room in the LRC but then cut the scene to the media studies office to make it look as if that's the interior of the staff room.
  • We had are actors and camera-man set up.
  • We had prepared a short script for some scenes.

Production:

  • We used a lot of natural lighting as it was bright enough for most of the scenes.
  • The cinematography was used in many different ways. For example, we pointed it at the mirror of the toilets without the actual camera being scene. We also put the camera on a tripod for still movement.

Post-Production:

  • We edited are short film on "Final Cut Pro".
  • we imported and took all of the scenes that we made and put them together.
  • we cut some of the scenes as it was too long and the short film could only be 1 minute long. We cut some parts of the toilet scene, staff room scene and the scene of opening the doors.
  • we added some filters for the final scene such as a bright filter since the final scene was too dark due to the light in the background.
  • We also added some smooth transitions for the staff room to the media studies office. Also wee added it for the media studies office to the toilets. this was to make the film look more fluent and smooth.
  • We included a thriller soundtrack in the background and we made it louder for the first two scenes but then made it slightly quieter so we could still hear the dialogue.

What Went Well:

  • The acting was top notch
  • The soundtrack of the short film made the whole thing look like a thriller
  • The short film looked fluent. There was no problems with a scene cutting to a totally irrelevant scene
  • Camera was well used. Very still and good use of using the mirror's reflection as a shot.

Even Better If:

  • improve the lighting in the last scene as it was too dark for the audience to see.

What have I learnt?:

  • I learnt about how to plan for a short film. We have to create a storyboard and a script before filming.
  • How the camera is used. (Putting the strap around the neck when it's not on a tripod. Putting the camera on the tripod)
  • How to edit a film on "Final Cut Pro"(importing scenes and cutting them together. Adding soundtrack. Using filters.)
  • Natural lighting can sometimes severely affect a scene in the film.
  • Short films are only allowed to be a maximum of one minute long

Final Reflection:

  • I think that the short film was a success because it appeared to like an actual short film and there was only small amount of minor problems (Lighting) but overall, the short film was running smoothly which therefore was a success

Audience Feedback:

  • "There was a good choice of setting"
  • "The soundtrack was great"
  • "The acting in the film was very well done. It fitted the genre of Comedy/Thriller"
  • "The lighting could have been improved in the last scene"

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 ( Lawrence, 2014) Trailer analysis

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 ( Lawrence, 2014):

  • The conventions that this trailer follow is that it has the distributor's name at the beginning of the trailer. Also it has the green background message which says that the trailer is approved for appropriate audiences. Another is that the convention is that it shows some of the characters in the film with their voices. It also includes background music and finally, at the end of the trailer, it shows the audience the name of the film.
  • I think that the target audience for the film is mostly for young adults due to the genre, the violent scenes and also the soundtrack.
  • The distributor has picked out some of the tense scenes in the film such as scenes where they show what weapons will be used and even scenes where they are shown being used. also the use of soundtrack. They used music from the film and also the use of colour. The trailer contains very dark colours and colours associated with fire such as red and orange.
  • My personal response for this trailer is that I truly think that this is targeted for young adults because with the scenes, sound and genre, it makes the film look very tense and action packed and I also think that it's not just for young adults but I also truly think it's for people who are into the action/science fiction genre due to the mise-en-scene we see in the trailer.

 NOMINATIONS/AWARDS:

  • The target audience for the film 'Sixteen' is mainly targeted for people who are interested in the urban thriller genre. The genre of 'Sixteen' can easily be recognised as an urban thriller due to the setting of the film as it is set London, Thamesmead, Dagenham, in the west side of London
  • One reason why Sixteen is mainly targeted to urban thriller fans is because it's set in an urban area such as London and this gives the urban atmosphere for the audience
  • Another reason is that the props they to make the film a thriller are quiet deadly and dangerous and it's usually still items that people nowadays still use today to cause trouble
  • Also, the soundtrack that was used also make the film an urban thriller which therefore makes the film targeted for urban thriller fans
